Kundapur, Jun 5: Even as fates of thousands of candidates in the gram panchayat electons are being decided, here's an incident in which a gram panchayat president rescued an elderly person from a well.
In an incident which came into the open with some delay, Praveenkumar Shetty, president of a gram panchayat in the taluk himself went down a well and brought out a senior citizen who had ventured into the well to remove silt and sediment. The incident occurred at Ramanagar in Nada village in the taluk.
A retired military officer residing in Ramanagar had lowered himself to the bottom of his well on June 1 for clearing it of slush. Two persons, Bachchi and Manjunath Poojary, his neighbours, were waiting at the platform of the well to dispose off the silt that was proposed to be lifted by using baskets. After finishing the work, the old man tried to come out of the well, but failed in his efforts, and fell down into the well twice, and therefore, let out cries out of fear of life.
Manjunath Poojary, realizing the seriousness of the situation, called out others for help. Local youngsters, Dayanand and Satyanarayana, who came there and found what had happened, immediately called president of Nada gram panchayat, Praveenkumar Shetty, over phone and explained to him about the incident. Shetty immediately summoned rope and extra long ladder from the panchayat. After lowering the rope for the retired military officer to hold, he tied the other end of the rope to his waist, and went down the ladder halfway to help the trapped person.
The senior citizen was thus brought out of the well safely. Praveenkumar was assisted in the task by local youth, K Gopalakrishna, Babu Devadiga, Shivanand Bhandary, Raju Poojary, Ramachandra, Arun Kanchan and other volunteers who are always prepared to serve the needy from nearby villages during critical situations.
