GP elections: Two collapse at counting centre; mild lathi charge as crowds gather
The long and monotonous process of vote counting of gram panchayat elections on Friday June 5 was not without its moments.
As large crowds gathered in front of the counting centre to celebrate their candidates' victories, the police resorted to mild lathi charge twice. The crowd however did not disperse.
Two persons who were assigned election duty collapsed at the counting centre. One was Boja Devadiga of Ulaibettu who fell unconscious reportedly due to low sugar, and the other was Shivaprasad Shetty of Gurpur who suffered seizures. Both were rushed to hospital by ambulance.
In another development towards the evening, Sucharita Shetty of BJP who lost from Paladka ward demanded a recount, alleging that there was 'cheating'. Two of his family members also lost.
Meanwhile, some of the assistants assigned with election duty alleged that they had not been paid salaries for the last two months. "We have worked so hard for these elections, but we have not been paid salaries for April and May. We are not even given remuneration for transport. We are being mistreated by officials of various grades who give us no respect at all," they alleged.
They also alleged that wrong information was being spread that the persons who collapsed were 'inebriated'. "They are trying to degrade our work," they alleged, without naming in particular.
Asked if use of EVMs would have made their job easier, they said it would not have made a difference to the workload even though counting would have been faster.
By 6.30 pm, counting for 206 out of 319 wards was completed. The process is expected to go on till night.
Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim visited the counting centre, and speaking to media said, "The counting process has gone on peacefully throughout the district. In Puttur and Sullia the process is over and other places it may go up till 8.30 or 9 pm. The first round took four hours to complete and that's why it got delayed. In Sullia three seats were tied, in Beltangady two seats were tied and in Belvai there was tie for one seat."
The BJP had the upper hand in Udupi district, winning 12 out of 19 GPs in Udupi taluk, 17 out of 26 in Kaup, and 26 out of 34 in Karkala. In Kundapur, BJP won 24 out of 58 GPs and Congress won 29, with five remaining undecided.
