Kakkebettu Poverty-stricken family case - Mother too departs

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, May 31: The mother of two little children from Kakkebettu Kalpane poverty-stricken family breathed her last on Saturday, May 30 at Wenlock hospital in city.

Mallika (32) is the deceased person. Her husband Srinivas (38) had died on May 20 at Wenlock hospital where he was taking treatment. Srinivas was paralysed for some months before he died.

Photos taken when the family was rescued by Childline

The family had attracted publicity due to the misery it went through in the recent past. The family of five which lived in a single house in Kakkebettu is scattered now with the husband and wife leaving this earth within a gap of only ten days. The relatives of the poor family have promised that they would look after the mother of Srinivas. She is fragile because of old age.

Children of the deceased parents are being looked after by Prakash, the brother of Mallika.

Daijiworld had published the story of Srinivas and his family on Wednesday May 20 first and then on May 21 soon after Srinivas' death. The family of five Srinivas, wife Mallika, Srinivas’ aged mother, and two boys aged 6 and 4 had a horrific time just before that.

The little children looked after their sick parents and grandmother for three days until they were rescued by Childline on Tuesday, May 19.The little children cared for the elders with whatever was available for three days without any help from outsiders.

History of the case

Srinivas had been paralysed and was on treatment. His wife Mallika who looked after him and their children too fell sick on an unfortunate day and was unable to move around.

After the mother also fell sick, there was none to go to. Relatives too were poor to do help in any manner. The children started looking after their parents. There was nothing to eat, but the elder boy got some food powder from the Anganwady where he attended school. He added water to the powder and fed his parents, grandmother and brother. That was the nourishment for the family for three long days.

Ultimately, help came after some neighbours phoned the women and child welfare department and the Childline. When Childline help arrived, the children were seen feeding the mother with tender coconut. They had themselves plucked the tender coconut from a small coconut tree nearby. The father had fallen from the bed and was trying to reach and get back on it. Grandmother of the children was seen crying endlessly as she was too old to anything.

The parents were then taken to Wenlock hospital and the children were rehabilitated by the department in the initial stage.

Srinivas was working as a labourer for a liquor company in the past. Yet he managed to build a small house of his own. After he was paralysed, his wife Mallika was very much disturbed and depressed due to husband's ill health and financial conditions.

The children were handed over later to their uncle Prakash.

With two deaths taking place within a gap of few days the misery of the family continues.

Note: Faces of children blurred upon request by Childline.

    Dear saleem, baji

i agree with u but let me also rectify what u hv said about zakath..2.5% of the cash n wealth like gold or rental income earned over a period of 12 lunar months at the time of computing zakath payables..thus 2.5 percent is applicabke to hard revenue n jewellery but in agricultural produce too one has to take it out zakath soon one harvests the crop..if crop is harvested by using rain water then zakath payable is 10% of the produce n if its done with irrigation where one has to spend then the share of zakath is 5% n it needs to be given soon after harvesting before one consumes the produce..similarly there is a seperate schedule to calculate zakath on commercially viable poultry birds n farm animals like horse, goats, sheeps, cows n other livestocks n cattles..all zakath should go to poors only .close n distant relatives, neighbours, orphans..etc are to be beneficiaries...no zakath to be spent on masjids, graveyards, schools or any other purpose..zakath should directly benefit human beings those are in need n those who deserves it most..no children can give zakath to parents as its duty of children to look after parents..parents can give zakath to their poor children. Husband cant give zakath to his wife but wife can give zakath to her poor husband from her inheritance or income. Zakath is a means of eradicating poverty from the society but very few muslims are sincere in zakath payments...strange but very true....zakath purifies ones wealth n soul..zakath can be taken n distributed throughout the year n there is no particular time as perceived by majority muslims that it should be given away during n before ramadan only..the right of zakath goes first to ones close blood relatives who are poor, then other relatives, then orphans n then poor neighbours n the like..There is no ruling that zakath can only be given to muslims...it can be given to any poor from any community of the 5 pillars, zakath speaks about poors right n riches duty towards poor

I had told before that Wenlock hospital is not the one to get treated!. Hardly any people have left this hospital completely recovered. Mallika should have been admitted to a private hospital as funds would have come from daiji reader's. Sad 2 young kids are orphaned and also their aged grandmother. Now it should be seen that the kids uncle doesn't have any terior motive behind looking after the kids as funds will come from many people.

It is nice that people like to support,God bless all of you
I think it is better, as children don’t have both parents, if anyone who don’t have children willing to adopt, because help can give, is that will use for children or misused we don’t know (This is my opinion)
Now days who have time to look the next door what is happening around, is have food, medicine, need help… because everyone is busy, may in work, TV, internet, function, party…and like their level people and not poor, one time no much education but people are helpful, not selfish, that time expired, may want come again, Mangalore has turned upside down,
We were born into this world, we came empty handed. When God calls us to our final destination, we go with nothing materially. All we take with us is our divine soul, which has done good or bad while our journey on this earth.
Fo"For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits ... “ For how would a man benefit to gain the whole world but destroy his soul or lose it?” ..r there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good,

Yeah Mr. Roy, we enjoy biryani while our next door neighbor is not even has water to quench his thirst! This is the state of our society now and then we fight with each other for silly reasons. I believe in helping one another and I think we should do that rather than hurting one another for which we have no authority.

Almighty is time and again shows us such examples to learn from and I am very much happy to see so many positive response & comments from so many people. Who says that we don’t have good people in our society…? Look at the comments below and you will find out that we all are good.., but we need some kick-start to get our good explore!

Really very sad news indeed! My heartfelt sympathies are with the family and pray that, may almighty help the 2 young brave children overcome this loss & misery in their life.

Just for the sake of sharing good thoughts, let me share this with everyone and it is not to say that who is right & who is wrong! But I strongly feel that, it’s our responsibility to see how our neighbors are…!

In Islam, the rights of neighbors comes next after own family, then comes close relatives, teachers, friends and others. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us to take care of the needs of suffering neighbors & relatives and he (PBUH) said that, if our neighbor is starving then we should share our food with them. This is the reason we Muslims observe fasting during the month of Ramadan to experience the feeling of hunger, and one of the 5 pillars of Islam is to pay the Zakath to poor & needy people annually. I think with this kind of helping hand we could help families like this one and many more in and around us.

Zakat in Islam - Zakat is an obligatory act ordained by Allah to be performed by every Muslim who is able to. It is an important pillar of Islam one that carries immense significance.
The Meaning of Zakat - The literal meaning of Zakat is purification. Therefore, by giving Zakat, a Muslim is essentially purifying his soul and his wealth.
How Much Zakat - Zakat is levied at 2.5% of all Zakat-able assets after deducting specific liabilities for the year. The annual payment of Zakat is done according to the lunar calendar.
Who to Give Zakat - The Qur’an is very specific about who should benefit from Zakat donations. The sole purpose is to help only those who cannot help themselves people living in poverty, those who are disabled or elderly and those who are incapable of supporting themselves.
