Kasargod, Apr 23: A man who was wanted in connection to the smuggling of a huge quantity of gold over two decades ago, has finally been caught by the Kasargod police.
The accused, Sainuddin Mohammed (50) from Bayaru Ponnangala, Uppala, was absconding for the last 21 years.
In 1994, he was arrested at Mumbai airport for smuggling in gold ornaments worth Rs 41 lac from a foreign country. The smuggled gold was seized by the officials.
However, he later got bail from a Mumbai court, and went absconding. It is learnt that he was hiding in a foreign country for eight years.
A few days ago he returned to his hometown to attend a relative's marriage. The information about his visit reached Kasargod DySP Ranjith, who along with his team succeeded in arresting Sainuddin.
The Mumbai police who had been hunting for him had taken the help of their counterparts in Kasargod. He will be handed over to the Mumbai police on Friday April 24 for further investigation, police sources said.
