Udupi, Apr 19: Just three days after he quit as district president of JD(S), Deviprasad Shetty on Sunday April 19 quit JD(S) and joined Congress.
On April 16, though he quit from the district president's post, he had said he would continue in the JD(S) as a member. However, on Sunday he quit the party to join Congress.
Urban development minister and district incharge Vinay Kumar Sorake, block Congress president Naveenchandra Shetty and other party leaders welcomed him into the party in a simple ceremony held at the Congress office in Kaup.
Addressing the gathering, Deviprasad Shetty said, "This day is a turning point in my political career. I have accepted the core ideology and principles of the Congress party and I am very happy to enter its fold. I have joined Congress without placing any conditions or demands. I will work sincerely without causing any problems to the party leaders."
About leaving JD(S), he said, "I was not cheated or betrayed by the JD(S). Former Prime Minister and JD(S) chief Deve Gowda has special affection for me and it is with his blessings only that I have come forward to take this step."
Vinay Kumar Sorake said, "The Congress party is experiencing lack of leadership in some areas which is affecting the party's progress. Hence, as per the decision taken by the party, we need to taken in those who adhere to the party's ideology and follow secular principles. The Congress has initiated this work by welcoming Deviprasad Shetty into the party's fold. He has joined the party as the instructions of senior party leaders Oscar Fernandes, Gopal Poojary, Pratapchandra Shetty, chief minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president Dr Parameshwar and others."
Congress leaders Diwakar Shetty, Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, Ignatius D'Souza, Deepak Yermal and many others were present.
