R V Deshpande threatens action against Goan IT workers in Bengaluru

Panaji, Apr 16 (PTI): A senior Karnataka minister has stoked a controversy by suggesting a retaliatory action against Goan IT professionals staying in Bengaluru if Goa government goes ahead with its drive to demolish illegal hutments at Baina beach in Vasco, which he said is aimed at "harassing" the Kannada settlers.

"If you start harassing people from Karnataka in Goa then do not forget that there are 15,000 to 20,000 Information Technology professionals working in Bengaluru," Karnataka Higher Education and Tourism Minister R V Deshpande told reporters after calling upon Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar here today.

Deshpande was apparently disturbed over the Parsekar government's move to demolish illegal hutments at the beach, which are mostly occupied by people from Karnataka.

The senior minister accused the Parsekar-led BJP government of singling out Kannada people in it's action.

"There are so many huts. But only those of Karnataka people are being demolished. Government has already cut their electricity and water supply," the minister said, adding such an action will adversely impact the relations between Goa and Karnataka.

Meanwhile, Goa CM Parsekar rubbished Deshpande's allegations, saying the action is not selective.

"The action is entirely against illegal hutments. They are demanding rehabilitation package. But we cannot have rehabilitation only for these people. We will have to work out an overall package for people across the state," the CM said while appealing to Deshpande not to politicise the issue.

Parsekar said people living in those hutments are not only from Karnataka but also from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu besides some locals.

Responding to Deshpande's comments hinting at eviction of the Goan IT professionals from Bengaluru, Parsekar said Goans do not live in hutments in Bengaluru illegally, "but they live in proper flats which are legal."

After forty to fifty years of migrating to Goa on work, do these people still live in hutments and shanties? Sheer nonsense. The evictions happening are of huts which have sprung up illegally recently.

These Goan Kannadigas have migrated there 40-50 years ago just because Goa had acute shortage of hard working labours. It is the Sweat & blood of Kannadigas which has gone in building the new Goa after the departure of Portuguese in 1962. Original Goan labours are lazy just like Mangaloreans and cannot do hard work required for mines and construction industry. So, these Kannadigas did not migrate to Goa recently due to failure of Siddu Govt to provide them livelihood.
The Goa-Kannadigas speak Konkani just like mother tongue, and present generation borne and brought up in Goa cannot speak Kannada fluently as they speak konkani all the while just like Mumbai Tuluvas who cannot speak fluent Tulu. After using their hard labour to build Goa's economy for 40-50 years now Goans find them to be outsiders just like use & through tissue paper. If all the Kannadigas leave Goa in one lot then Goa's economy will crumble like card house within no time.

Kannadigas Are working in Goa, as rubbish pickers , Toilet cleaners because these Goans are very Proud people and do not do these type of Jobs.
Please treat these class Kannadiga People with respect and give them a Proper Shelter Instead of them staying in Illegal Hutments
It is basic human rights, In gOa ive never seen Hutments,
So if Goans not stay in Hutment How you expect These Menial workers to stay Hutment

these idiots call Rahul Gandhi as their super leader, that is when you know, this country is doomed and gets only such pinheads as leaders!4
deshpande, there are lakhs of kannadigas living in goa, who are ethical and legal workers! nobody is been asked to quit like u do to Goan citizens! most of goans in bengaluru are legal employees, and minority in that!

the problem with Kannadiga's in vasco, are workers who have gone there because of FAILURE of your govt here, which cant even give them a simple job! and put their tent in beach area and ruined looks of beaches, in a state which depends on TOURISM!... if u have so much of interest for them, get them back here and make them put a tent inside your Deshpande engineering institute in Haliyal! vhe vhe vhe

Sounds like this minister has gone out of his mind. What the Goan govt. is doing is legal by all means but if you keep promoting views of people like Mr.Deshpande then India will become a Slum Haven.

In a democratic country you do not have right to speak like this Mr. Deshpande. Tomorrow Goa could also ban imports of fish from Karnataka and also people coming from Karnataka for tourism.

Which world do you live in. All for the sake of a few extra votes you make shame and disgrace this country with more slums by encouraging them.

Our Karnataka Minister Sir, please do not demean our State while comparing the illegal slums to that of IT workers of Bengaluru. For us, they are all Indians. While the decision of demolition of illegal slums is the respective State's prerogative, we should use our Offices in a decent & proper way rather than making a political issue out of it.

Its the right move by goan govt. first of all, anybody who knows about the area will not oppose it. it was once the biggest prostitution area in goa. during parrikar's first term, the whole prostitution business was stopped. There are many people staying in illegal huts, they were developed as vote banks by the local MLA's there. whatever is iilegal should be demolished. Despande doesn't know what he is talking. Maybe just trying to score a political point.
