Mangaluru: Partial closure of highway - three accidents at Haleangady

Mangaluru, Apr 2: On Wednesday April 1, three separate accidents occurred near Haleangady on national highway 66.

Two persons were injured and hospitalized in these accidents. Reportedly, the accidents were caused on account of routing of traffic on one side of the road because of ongoing highway widening work that is moving at snail's pace.

In one such accident, a mini truck loaded with soft drink bottles, which was speeding towards Udupi from the city, hit a woman pedestrian at Haleangady Junction, injuring the lady seriously. The woman, Sarita (32) from Kolnad village near Haleangady, and working as maid in the house of businessman from Haleangady, Mahesh Hegde, was admitted into a hospital for treatment.

In another accident, a bus and truck collided with each other. In this incident, vehicles got damaged, and no one was injured.

In the third accident which happened near Sagu in Haleangady, a car hit a scooter. The scooter rider suffered serious injuries, and was admitted into a hospital for treatment.

The people hope that the people attending highway work will increase pace of work and open the entire highway for vehicular movement at the earliest so that the number of accidents of the above kind will come down.

    I fully endorse and agree with the point raised by N Shetty, Surathkal.Not only before 100 meters the diversion points but at all the dangerous places like steep curve,speed breakers,humps and any such places wherein dangers to the human lives should be warned by installing sign boards.This is the duty of NHAI authorities,which they are not doing at present.At least in the interest of public lives,NHAI authorities should take an initiative to put sign boards warning the public in order to future accidents of this type.

    those in power are beginning to become insensitive to suffering, they are bothered only if something in their immediate family.inspectors should be held responsible.

    These Accidents are wholly avoidable. (Lots of Near misses are not counted here).
    The NHAI Authorities should be pulled up and fined for all the loss of lives and damages.
    Why cant they put up Warning Sign boards at least 100 meters before the Diversion Point.
    Even the Potholes at Kulur Bridge are not attended to and they have now become Craters...daily Jams are taking place and God save the Patients in Ambulances !.
    or NHAI ,at least put up a sign board "Drive,Slow Work in Progress" !!!

    These accidents happening on the NH66 is due to sudden change of diversion without anybody's notice overnight.Even the daily commuting travellers are getting confused because of these sudden change in the direction.Concerned authorities,departments and NH Authorities should look into the matter very seriously and inform the drivers,commuters well in advance so that they can take precautionary measures well in advance before reaching the particular point of diversion and thereby concerned authorities can enable the drivers,commuters to minimize the accidents to maximum level.Otherwise these accidents will keep on happening at alarming level without any brake.

    The problem is every day the diversions are changed. It is a huge nuisance for drivers. Why cant the whole stretch of road be completed in one shot??
