Bengaluru: Kannada mandatory subject in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Mar 31 (PTI): Kannada language will be a mandatory subject in classes one to ten in schools affiliated to Karnataka board and a compulsory medium of instruction from classes one to five.

This is envisaged in the Kannada Language Learning Bill, 2015 making Kannada a mandatory subject in classes one to ten and Right To Education Act Amendment Bill which were passed by a voice vote in the state Assembly today.

The second bill amended Section 29 (2) of the Right To Education Act to change the provision "medium of instruction shall, as far as practicable, be in mother's tongue" to "Kannada or mother tongue will be medium of instruction in primary schools" from classes to one to five.

The amendment would help the government in its arguments before the Supreme Court when the curative petition related to its language policy is taken up.

The Supreme Court had rejected a revision petition filed by the state government seeking review of its ruling which upheld a Karnataka High Court judgement striking down its government order issued in 1994 to impose Kannada or mother tongue as a medium of instruction in primary schools.

Tuluvas foolishly accept this alien Kannada. Kannada should be rejected in Tulu nadu as this kannada is not our langauge. Instead of Congress, BJP a separate Tulu Nadu Party should be launched to adress the concerns of Tulu Nadu. People must fight for separate Tulu Nadu State. Jai Tulu Nadu.

these so called kannadigas , always tried to impose kannada on tuluvas ,though SC strictly warned against language cleansing , kanadigas always tried for it , the MLAs from south canara are useless and agree to every moves of the government , be it river diversion , thermal power plant and now imposing kannada on children etc ,

but when comes to tax they beg , south canara is 2nd largest tax contributors , with one of the lowest expenditure towards development from government

so grow up tuluvas , ultimate sollution is only a seperate state

I studied in Kannada medium and today i am working as a Secretary, however I am not able to communicate in English like my other colleagues and they make fun of me. English is required in everyone office. So kannada will help you to survive only Karnataka. What happens, if we go to other places, how we will find a job. English will help to survive in any part of the world and they gain more respect than in any other language. So please think of everyone and their future. Our children are our future. If we don't help them, how they will help us.

    Dear Mr Alwin,
Thanks you very much for taking the time and the effort to type out such a long and very informative story. Hopefully it will have the desired effect. My mother tongue is Kannada, but I cannot support forcing anybody to learn Kannada to the exclusion of another probably more commercially useful language.

    Best Regards

Dear Rajesh, Thank you for your encouraging words. I too studied in Kannada medium, however was fortunate to be moved to English in college and that has made all the difference to me in life. During the initial college days, I had my initial frustrations due to language barriers and had lamented how the life could have been better had I studied in English medium in primary and high school. However I was able to overcome after the college days. This made it easier for me gel in the professional world.

Just like the eating habits are the choice of the people, medium of education of our children is also the choice of the parent and government has no right to impose their will on the parents. Ultimately the evolution theory, survival of fittest/adaptable prevails. I am also angry at the ploys of the so called politicians and intellectuals of the state, who educate their children in the best of the best English medium schools, imposing all this scrap on the common people and depriving commoners from all opportunities. As Chetan Bhagat said, it is possible to have the native language as mother and English as wife and love both

By making Kannada Language Mandatory no one will loose anything. We all learned Kannada and grown up. It is a beautiful language. We should learn it and preserve it. Those who are migrating to Gulf country also, they have to learn Arabic till 10th standard. One Language will not make any difference in school to learn or if you go out of India also.

After hearing this, I thanked my stars for having studied with medium of as English. This was one of the main reason, I am able to get a job and also able to provide decent living to my family and good education to my children. I could not imagine me or anybody ending in such a state after putting their best part of the life in studying in a language, which did not help in them any way for the rest of life. In the end, it is the right of the parents, to choose, in which medium their children should study as the medium is the main factor which decides their future and nobody should ruin their life because of the medium. Government has no right to interfere in this, as the government does not guarantee any reasonable jobs/earning in life which ultimately affects the society. It is a bitter truth that, given how competitive the world has become now, children who did not study in the English medium, could end up losing a lot.

    continued..
Most of cleaning boys are either illiterate or school outs. This guy is a very hardworking and pleasant person. During a casual talk, I asked him why he did not study. His answer shocked me. He said he is an M Sc graduate in Mathematics and was topper in the university. He was able to explain Calculus. Trigonometry. Theorem etc fluently and effortlessly. I asked him in that case why he took this job. He said all my education was in Tamil Medium (even the university) and till he came to Gulf, he could hardly speak any English. He could not get any job, which required him to communicate in English, hence had ended up in this job. Since he was from an upper caste, his job prospects in Chennai were also less hence he had to come to the gulf. He could not go for work in other states, due to non-exposure to English.

Just imagine, given his intelligence and hardworking attitude, where he would have ended up had he studied in English. He could have easily landed some good jobs in US or atleast a decent job in the Gulf or other Indian states. Here was a man whose education failed in providing a decent career because he studied in the native language. The irony is that his whole 16 years education did not provide him a meaningful earning in life and was a total waste. He said that, now he has put his children in the English Medium schools, since he has understood the mistake and will not let this happen with his children. He is also supporting his sister children to study in the English medium. The good part of the story is, our office has hired him now and he is better off now

I request the readers to read this real life story, then decide which medium their children should study and how practical is studying the native language medium. I always keep telling this story to my friends and thought of sharing with the readers.

We have an Indian man working in our office as a messenger/peon/cleaning boy. They are hired from labor/cleaning companies on contract basis. He hails from a village near Chennai. Anybody working in the Gulf countries knows kind of work these cleaning boys do, the salaries they get, their labor camps and the conditions. These boys have to get up at 4 in the morning, set off to work at 5AM start working at one place, by 6. From 6 to 8 he does cleaning at one place and then he comes to our office. He works in our office from 8 to 4, doing messenger/peon work etc. After 4, he goes to three other places for cleaning jobs and return to the camp by 10PM. (previously his company itself had the cleaning contract for our office and after 4, he used to do the cleaning job in our office). The same story repeats on the next day and every day. Most of time they have works on Friday also. On an average he works 14-15 hours a day. For works beyond 8 hours, he is paid overtime. Including overtime, his monthly salary is in the range of INR 18,000-25,000.

Or is it just to see how many likes your comment gets, as this is the trend amongst daiji readers now. This is a comment page, not a question page. Can all the youths who pass out of Schools and Colleges in Karnataka get suitable jobs only within Karnataka where Kannada proficiency is required and English is not necessary ?
Can Karnataka Govt and Kannada enthusiasts ensure that every one will get job in Karnataka and no one will have to go to other states or outside India in search of job ?

I have seen many kannadigas, inspite of being very intelligent they were not able to get jobs even within Karnataka just for not having good command over English.

Mangaluru, after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in 1799, came under (East India Company Ltd's) Madras Presidency.

Over the years, Mangaluru had no administrative link with most of Karnataka. Mangalurians spoke Tulu, Konkani and Byari languages and not Kannada. Any major Mangalurian issues went to the Madras Governor.

Then came India's independence. The princely holdings, (many of which were annexed by India all the way until 1949), became the new states. They were not at all based on languages.

Acceding to the noises from various quarters (starting with Telugu and Marathi speakers), there a reorganisation of states along linguistic lines (1956).

That is how Kannada, the dominant language of Mysore, became associated with the Mysore state.

    Later on Mysore became Karnataka.

The Kannada-speaking ministers, elected by the majority Kannada speakers, have ever since tried to disown every other language but Kannada.

Supreme Court inists on the right of individuals to be educated in their mother-tongue.

I think that is fair, and goes well with human rights.

So, non-Kannada populations (Tulu, Konkani, Byari, Kodava etc) must not support compulsory Kannada in schools.

Let them do their work here if they desire. If Goa govt decides to appease them, it is fine. But demands here for separate establishments are not fine...
