Popstar Remo wants to defy kissing ban in Goa village

Panaji, March 27 (IANS): Goan popstar and Padma Shri awardee Remo Fernandes wanted "right-thinking" couples to kiss publicly on a pre-determined day in the Goa village which has banned kissing in public.

In a Facebook comment on Friday Remo said: "I think every right-thinking couple in the village should come out to the village square on a given day and protest by doing an en masse kissing in public," Fernandes said, reacting to a post over an IANS story about Salvador do Mundo village which banned kissing in public earlier this month.

The ban on kissing, drinking alcohol, playing loud music in public in the village came under the spotlight after photos of a banner printed and hoisted in public within Salvador do Mundo went viral on social media.

"There were a lot of unwanted things happening there and causing irritation to the people," village deputy sarpanch Reena Fernandes has said, justifying the ban.

The ban has triggered outrage in Goa's civil society.

Remo Fernandes wanted Goa to sort out its priorities first.

"It's high time we got our priorities right on what to ban, and what not to," he said.
