PSG extend contract with Maxwell until next summer

Paris, March 20 (IANS): Defending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have announced their decision to extend a deal with Brazilian defender Maxwell for one more year.

"Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce that Maxwell has signed a one-year contract extension. The Brazil international defender is now tied to the capital club until June 2016," read a statement of the club on its website on Thursday, reports Xinhua.

The 33-year-old Brazilian international joined from Spanish team FC Barcelona three years ago for a fee of 3.5 million euros and has made 128 appearances in all competitions for the club since arriving at the Parc des Princes.

He's won both the French top-flight league and the French Super Cup twice in 2013 and 2014, as well as last season's Cup of League with Les Pariens.

"I am very proud of the confidence placed in me by the president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the whole Club. I will continue to give everything to help the club try and reach its objectives," Maxwell told the club's website on Thursday.

"Maxwell is an exceptional player who has brought so much to this club since he joined us. We are delighted that he has signed on for an extra year with Paris Saint-Germain, which is perfectly normal, given his investment on and off the pitch and the quality of his performances," commented PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

The Brazilian has previously played for several of top European clubs, such as Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam, Italy's Inter Milan and Barcelona.
