Asuncion (Paraguay), March 5 (IANS): FIFA has turned down a request by South American football's governing body Conmebol to allow a fourth substitution at this year's Copa America.
Conmebol last year wrote to FIFA asking for an extra substitute to be permitted when matches go into extra time, reports Xinhua.
Speaking during a visit to Asuncion on Wednesday, FIFA president Joseph Blatter said the proposal had not been raised during last week's International Football Association Board (IFAB) meeting in Belfast.
"There was no need to vote because it wasn't discussed," Blatter told reporters. "It wasn't an opportune time to raise the issue."
The Copa America will be played in Chile from June 11 to July 4. It will involve each of Conmebol's 10 South American nations as well as Mexico and Jamaica.
