The theme of the programme was 'road safety is not just to save the life, but it should be a way of life'. It was organized at the School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru on Wednesday January 28.
Uday Nayak the ACP city traffic Mangaluru inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.
Addressing the gathering Uday Nayak said, "We have acute shortage of staff in the department. We have sent a proposal to the Government for appointing traffic wardens but approval is pending before the government. Every year 13 lac people die in road accidents. To be safe on the road all riders and pedestrians have to follow traffic rules. In this direction the central government has endorsed the road safety slogan "road safety is not just to save the life, but it should be a way of life” this year. The main rule for driving is carrying a driving license in order to drive. If one doesn't have a driving license, it should be obtained from the RTO by paying the nominal fee. A registration certificate must be carried at all times and emission test has to be done every 6 months. Pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road." He thanked all the dignitaries on the dais.
Speaking on the occasion G S Hegde, ARTO, RTO, Mangaluru said, "More than 1 lac people loose their lives in accidents every year. In most of the cases youngsters are victims. Youngsters play on the road with their vehicles . They have to realize that the road is not a play ground for stunts. All have follow traffic rules strictly, whether traffic police are around or not. Imagine that traffic policeare sign boards. A helmet has to be worn always while riding the bike.
He also added,"Women drivers are more cautious compared to men. I request more women to drive. Lady drivers have to be employed in public transport so that roads are more safe. 'You drink you drive you die', so don't drink and drive. Pedestrians have to walk on the right side of the road so that they can see vehicles coming."
Uday Nayak, ACP city traffic Mangaluru, G S Hegde, ARTO, RTO, Mangaluru and Dr Sophia N Fernandes, principal, School of social work, Mangaluru were present at the event.
