London, Jan 16 (IANS): Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta underwent ankle surgery and needs "approximately three months" to be back to action, the English Premier League club said.
Spanish midfielder Arteta Thursday removed a bony spur that was causing him discomfort from his left ankle, reports Xinhua.
"The procedure went well and Mikel will now begin a period of rehabilitation which is expected to last approximately three months," Arsenal said.
Arteta has not played for the Gunners since damaging a calf in the 2-0 Champions League win at home to Borussia Dortmund Nov 26.
