Mangaluru, Jan 11: Five players from St Joseph’s high school represented Karnataka and secured third position in the national level football tournament, held in Bellary recently.
For the first time, Karnataka girl’s football team reached at this level in the football tournament.
For the third position, Karnataka beat strong Odisha by 2-1 goals. Lenisha and Jancila of St Joseph’s High School scored goals for Karnataka team. Mizoram were the winners of the national level tournament. They beat Manipur by 3-0 goals.
This is for the first time Karnataka won a medal in the national level football tournament. The team was lead by Kavya V, a student of St Joseph’s High School, Bajpe. Ahliya Khan, Lenisha Fernandes, Crystal Pinto and Jancila Cutinha were other students of St Josephs P U College who played for Karnataka.
In the league match, they defeated Andhra Pradesh by 5-0, Madhya Pradesh 2-0, Chhattisgarh by 2-0 goals and drew the match with Mizoram 1-1.
In the quarter finals, Karnataka girls defeated Sikkim by 1-0 goal. In the semi finals, Karnataka team lost against strong Mizoram by 2-0 goals.
The girl’s football team of St Joseph’s High School, Bajpe, won the state level tournament organized by Department of public Instruction, held in Coorg recently.
The girl’s team also won the state level tournament organized by Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports which was held at Vijayapura.
Even in the college level, St Joseph’s P U College have won the state level and played the national level tournament in Goa.
Both, college and high School girls’ teams are trained by the principal of the college, Br Hector Pinto and assisted by Anthony.
