Mangaluru, Jan 9: Drivers of luxury private buses plying between the city and Mumbai are on a warpath with owners since some days. On Tuesday June 6, the employees of these buses held protest demonstration in front of the offices of Anand Travels and Canara Pinto Travels, to register their resentment against anti-labour policies of the bus operators.

The protest was organized under the banner of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The agitators demanded for meeting medical expenses of a bus driver named Jayakumar, who was assaulted at Kumta, and to hike the allowance of Rs 1,250 being presently paid for three days to bus drivers. They also asked for providing protection to the drivers.

Vasant Achary, general secretary of CITU Motor Transport and Engineering Workers Unions, leaders, Sunilkumar Bajal, Yadava Shetty, DYFI leader, B K Imtiaz, and some other leaders addressed the protesters.

Bunder police station house officer, Ramakrishna, intervened in the issue and fixed time for holding dialogues between workers and management. Therefore, the protest was temporarily called off. However, the strike by the bus drivers continues.
