DMDK demands action against those indulging in violence

Chennai, Jan 7 (IANS): Actor-turned-politician A. Vijaykant-led DMDK Wednesday demanded action against those who indulged in violence in Tamil Nadu following the conviction of former chief minister and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.

The second largest party in the state assembly also condemned the ruling AIADMK for playing dual role on the release of five Tamil Nadu fishermen condemned to death by a Sri Lanka court.

In a resolution passed at its general council meeting held in Coimbatore around 500 km from here, the DMDK condemning those indulged in violence following Jayalalithaa's conviction urged the police to take action against them.

The party also condemned the AIADMK for terming the release of five fishermen by Sri Lanka as a drama in the parliament while in the assembly passing a resolution thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government for the fishermen's release.

In another resolution, the DMDK urged the state government to remove the pictures of Jayalalithaa from all the government offices.

The party also passed resolutions urging the state government to reduce the power and milk rates and pay the sugarcane farmers a procurement price of Rs.3,500 per tonne of cane.

The DMDK requested the Madras High Court to order a probe on the running of the sand quarries in the state and a CBI probe into the operations of beach sand mineral quarries.

The party also put out all speculations on its continuance in the BJP led National Democratic Alliance by remaining silent on the issue.
