M'luru: Bishop lays foundation stone for new clergy home

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The foundation stone was laid for the new home for the retired priests of Mangalore diocese by Dr Aloysius Paul D Souza, at St Antony's Charitable Institution premises on January 1.

The Bishop led the prayer and blessed the foundation stone of the clergy home named as "St Joseph Vas Home". Bishop expressed his appreciation and requested the priests present to contribute financially towards the completion of the mega project.








Speaking at the occasion. Fr Willaim Menezes, the PRO and Estate manager gave details regarding the project. The project is spread in an area of 95 cense of land at St Antony’s Institute. The clergy home is named as St Joseph Vaz Home after the memory of the saint who came to Mangalore. The project provides homes for 35 priests.6000 square feet building of three stories costing 12 corers, with well furnished rooms and all the modern facilities required for the senior priests to spend their retired life peacefully. The project will be completed by May 2016.

Along with Bishop Mnsgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Vicar general, Fr John Vas, procurator, Fr Onil ,director of St Antony’s Home, M P Noronha, secretary Diocesan pastoral parished, Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director Fr Muller Hospital, Fr Joseph Martis the Rector St Joseph’s Seminary and many priests were present at the occasion.

    It is important that retired priests have a decent and comfortable place to stay during their old age. And the diocese certainly has to ensure that such care is provided for.
    However, it would be even more exemplary if the priests at their council meeting unanimously decided to have a simple living-space to spend their retired life spending more time in prayer and spiritual duties rather than in "leisure". For a priest, when unable to continue active ministry, the call to a life of prayer should be even more intense. This is what lends credibility to priestly life and brings much consolation to the faithful.
    I hope this retired home blends well with the call to be "shepherds who have the smell of the sheep" and to be a "church of the poor and for the poor".
