Mangaluru, Dec 30: Relating to two separate incidents of snatching of chains worn by women, the court of the chief judicial magistrate has sentenced four persons after finding them guilty.
Two persons who had come in a motor bike, had sped away after snatching a 12 grams gold chain from the neck of Mashu, a resident of Bokkapatna, when she was walking by the road near Jamia Masjid on Kudroli-Bokkapatna Road on July 12, 2009.
In this case, the policemen found that Muhammed Saleem was riding the motor bike while Jamaluddin was travelling in the pillion. This chain was then pawned by Muhammed Raza (26) from Uliya in Ullal and Jamaluddin (29) from Soorinje and had given the money raised thereon to the accused.
This case had been registered in Bunder police station. Inspector, Vinay A Gaonkar, had conducted investigation and filed charge sheet in the court. Chief judicial magistrate, Nagalingana Gowda S Patil, sentenced both the accused to one year each of rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 each. In case of failure to pay fine, they will have to undergo six more months of simple imprisonment. The third accused, Muhammed Raza, escaped with only fine of Rs 10,000, while Muhammed Shariff has remained elusive.
The other case pertains to snatching of a 70 grams chain by two persons on a motor bike from the neck of a pedestrian named Indira Raikar from near the warehouse in Mannagudda in the city. The case was registered in Barke station, and Vinay Gaonkar had filed charge sheet. In this case, Sujit Kumar (30) from Malappuram in Kerala but staying in Bykampady Angaragundi, was riding the motor bike, while Muhammed Salim from Bykampady Angaragundi was his associate who was riding in the backseat. Muhammed Raza and Muhammed Shariff had pledged the jewellery and handed over money so raised to the accused.
In this case too, Sujit and Muhammed were awarded one year each of rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5,000 fine. The third accused, Raza, was fined Rs 10,000.
In both the above cases, the amounts of fine have been ordered to be given to the complainant women as relief.
