India win gold at the U-16 Chess Olympiad


Kolkata, Dec 22 (IANS): India justified their top billing to win the gold in the Under-16 Chess Olympiad held at University of Gyor in Hungary.

India overcame stiff competition from formidable teams like Russia and Iran to claim first place in the ten-round tournament that ended Sunday. Russia and Iran took the second and third spot respectively.

International Master (IM) Arvind Chithambaram (rating 2476) got the second place while IM Murali Karthikeyan (2497) settled for a fourth place finish. Arvind scored 8 points out of 9 matches, whereas Murali scored the same number of points featuring in all the ten games, according to information received here.

IM Diptayan Ghosh (5.5 out of 9). Kumaran Balaji (4.5 out of 9) and GK Monisha (0.5 out of three), were the other members of the team.
