Mangaluru, Nov 19: National fishworkers' forum, Kerala Swathanthra Malsya Thozhilali Federaton (Kerala Independent Fishworkers Federation) and Karnataka coastal fishermen's action committee will be holding 10-day boat march from Mangaluru to Thiruvananthapuram for various demands with the union government, said Vasudev Bolooru, the vice-president of national fish workers' forum.
This protest will be organized under the slogan 'Protect sea, coast, inland water bodies and fish resources'.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, November 19, Vasudev said that social activist Medha Patkar will be inaugurating this event on Friday November 21 at Mangaluru fishing harbour. State minister Abaychandra Jain, MLA J RLobo, and MLC Ivan D' Souza will be present on this occasion.
He also said that union government should include their demands in next budget. The demands include 1) Union government should appoint independent fisheries minister 2) Provide subsidized kerosene for country boats 3) Stop restricting the subsidy of Rs 3 per liter of diesel only for those below poverty line and 4) Discontinue road tax.
Six boats will start the journey from Mangaluru and several boats will join along the route, he added.
He also revealed that in 2015 they will hold campaign called 'Delhi March' urging the government to fulfill the demands of fishermen.
