Manipuri, Sri Lankan among medal winners at Bhatkhande convocation


Lucknow, Nov 17 (IANS): Musicians from across the country as well as from abroad would attend the fourth convocation of the Bhatkhande Musical University in the state capital to be held Nov 20, officials said Monday.

Shruti Sadolikar, vice chancellor of the university, said that at the convocation, meritorious students would be given medals (11 gold, 7 silver and six bronze) for their prowess.

Prominent among the medal winners is K.L. Nelson, a student from Manipur, who will be awarded three medals. Nelson, an expert at playing sitar, would be awarded with the Eai Umanath Bali gold medal, the Leela Vamanrao Sadolikar gold medal and the V.S. Nigam gold medal.

Narendra Gunaratne from Sri Lanka would receive the Pandit Kishan Maharaj gold medal and Pandit Vamanrao Sadolikar gold medal.

The vice-chancellor added that the university was happy that it not only imparted the highest standards of quality in classical music but also attracted talent from all over the world.
