Udupi, Nov 4: Regional transport department commenced a programme ‘Air pollution control month’ to reduce and control air pollution, at the RTO office Rajathadri, here on Monday, November 3.
Police superintendent Rajendra Prasad symbolically inaugurated the programme ‘Air pollution control month’.
In his inaugural speech, he said, “Keeping neat and clean atmosphere is not limited for one day or a month, but it is a continuous process. Now-a-days, air pollution has taken a giant shape in society and prevention is a big challenge”.
He opined that traffic police constable suffered the most because of air pollution. “They are totally exposed to the poisonous gas. That’s why government is providing Rs 1,000 for constable to DGP, Rs 2,000 for all India police authorities for yearly health check up”, he added.
He said that there was no preventive medicine concept due to lack of awareness. Each person should develop a sense of social commitment, only then people can get pollution free air.
Prof and dean of Madhwavadiraja institution, A Ganesh said, “We are lagging behind in implementation of governmental schemes. Nearly 50% are breathing poisonous air. Six states are having 30% air pollution from transport. But Udupi is in safe zone”.
Rajshekar Puranik district pollution controlling officer commented that public was destroying natural resources for commercial activities. 35% air pollution was done by transport, 20% from road dusts,
14% smoke from industrial wastage, 14% from constructional works and 7% from generators.
One of the police officers questioned the gathering saying whether there was any need for Bike rally. According to him, it contributed in air pollution as well as traffic jams on the road.
Kumar, additional DC, ARTO Felix D’Souza and drivers among others were present on the occasion.
Arun Kumar Singh district Regional Transport officers welcomed the gatherings and Vishwanath Nayak delivered the vote of thanks.
