Udupi, Oct 3: "Gandhiji had dreamed of the cleanliness we are speaking about during his birth anniversary seventy years ago. Cleanliness does not consist of cleaning of our surroundings alone. On the contrary if we clean our minds, the instances of crime such as rapes and murders will be destroyed and the country will be cleaned in the true sense," said Dr Duggappa Kajekar, Head of the Department of Social Science of postgraduate studies in Udupi Thenkanidiyooru Government First grade college.
He had arrived as a special lecturer on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations held under the aegis of Udyavara Government Pre University College. He said that Gandhiji was a classical scholar. "He can be termed as social scholar, political scholar or researcher as all those names suit him. He was saying that we should be independent without depending on machines. He is being misunderstood because of
that. It is a dangerous development," he added. Let us try to understand his values and principles at least to some extent, he said.
Udyavara Nagesh Kumar, vice president of school development and management, who presided over the programme said that Gandhi Jayanti
celebrations have become mechanical these days. "When Gandhiji visited 120 places in Karnataka for the development of Harijans, he had also come to Udyavar. The snap taken then by Ideal Studio in Udupi is still preserved. He went to Udupi from there. Some people urged him to come to Krishna math. However he refused to go to that temple when he was told that there is no entry for all the people, there. We can see here the feeling of uniformity in him," he said.
Now when the agricultural land vanishes, vehicles increase in houses and discrimination increases, I am reminded of Gandhiji, he said.
Dr Duggappa Kajekar earlier garlanded the picture of Mahatma Gandhi. Students said prayers for all religions. Taluk panchayat members Girish Kumar, grama panchayat members Vijaya Kumar Udyavar, Ramesh Acharya, president of Parent Teacher Association and K S Kuberappa, head of the high school were present.
Teacher Prabha B introduced the guests. Principal P K Mohan welcomed while Ravindra Naik, physical education teacher proposed the vote of
thanks. Teacher Dayavathi compered the programme.
