Puttur, Aug 21: The policemen have cracked a case in connection with finding an unidentified corpse of a man lying at the bus stand at Mukrampady here on February 10 this year.

The police from the town station here have arrested Nizamuddin (20), who happens to be the main accused and Khalandar Shaffi (23), who has been accused of helping the murderer. Another accused, Muhammed Anisuddin, studying in a private college here, has fled from his home and the police are trying to locate his whereabouts.

Some locals had brought to the notice of the police on February 10 this year that a lifeless body was found lying at Mukrampady bus stand. The police had visited the spot and noted down the details but identification of the body could not be done.

They had found a deep gash on the back of his head and blood clot on the forehead. A case of unnatural death was registered. Initially, the body was taken to the government hospital and then to a hospital in Deralakatte for postmortem because of suspicious circumstances under which the body was found. The postmortem report had suspected that the death would have been caused by serious assault and it was not an accidental death.

During their investigation the police learnt that the lungi and t-shirt on the body of the corpse belonged to a person named Nizamuddin. Town police inspector B K Manjayya who happens to be the investigating officer of the case arrested Nizamuddin from Darbe when he was going by scooter. During his questioning Nizamuddin confessed to his role in the crime. On the basis of the information provided by him, the other accused Khalandar Shaffi was taken into custody from Koornadka.

Nizamuddin told the police that he had found that man standing near his house under suspicious circumstances. Even after he was asked to move away, he remained unmoved. Angered by his stubbornness, Nizamuddin drove him away. After sometime, the same person was found again standing near Nizamuddin's home. Thinking him to be a thief, Nizamuddin chased him away, during which the man fell into a pit nearby. As he was shouting for help he was brought out by Nizamuddin with the help of his friend Khalandar Shaffi.

Finding that blood was oozing out of the man's forehead and blood stains had been formed on his shirt, Nizamuddin replaced the man's clothes with his own lungi and t-shirt. Later, he brought the man in a vehicle with help from Khalandar Shaffi and Muhammed Anisuddin to Mukrampady bus stand. The trio returned after leaving the man in the bus stand, Nizamuddin reportedly told the police.

The two accused were produced in the court and remanded to judicial custody.
