KINGSTON, Jul 3: India beat West Indies by 49 runs on the third day of the fourth and final Test on Sunday. India win the series 1-0.
Chasing 269 for victory, West Indies could manage 219 runs. D Ramdin played a solid knock of 62 and remained not out.
Anil Kumble took 6 wickets, Sreesanth 3 and Munaf Patel chipped in with the important wicket of Brian Lara.
Earlier, India took three wickets after lunch as the advantage swung their way on the third day of the Test .
Shanthakumaran Sreesanth had taken two wickets and Munaf Patel and Anil Kumble one each as the West Indies, chasing 269 for victory, went into tea on 85 for four.
Sreesanth, who earlier removed Chris Gayle, sent fellow opener Daren Ganga back to the pavilion for 16 in the fourth over after lunch with a superb late-swinging yorker that crashed into off stump.
India claimed the vital wicket of Brian Lara in the next over when Munaf cut a delivery back into the left-hander, who had stayed in his crease while shuffling across his stumps. Lara was leg-before-wicket for 11.
The experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who has enjoyed considerable success against India in the past, then came in but leg-spinner Kumble soon had him lbw for 13, the batsman playing across a delivery that turned into him.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has recovered from the seriously bruised knee that forced him to bat with a runner in the first innings, steadied the ship and reached 31 not out by tea, with Dwayne Bravo with him on 13.
Earlier, seamer Corey Collymore completed a five-wicket haul as the West Indies wrapped up the Indian second innings. India, resuming on 128 for six, could only make 171 all out with Collymore taking five for 48 in 24.1 overs.
That still left the West Indies with the daunting target of 269 to win the Test and the series, which will not only be the highest total of the match, but the most runs ever scored at Sabina Park to win a Test.
Captain Rahul Dravid with a battling 68 again kept India firmly in the picture after his second half century of the game. No other player has made 50 in the match.
