Swimming pool of int'l standards to come up at Emmekere: Jain

Bangalore, Apr 26: The State Government is taking up a project to build an international level swimming pool at Emmekere in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore.

Work would start soon on the project, said Minister of State for Sports and Youth Services Abhayachandra Jain speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Friday.

Similarly, the work will begin on the swimming pool at Udupi, which is yet to take off even one year after laying the foundation stone was laid.

About the Udupi Indoor Stadium, which collapsed within one year after it was constructed, the minister said that a probe had been ordered on the poor quality of work which has resulted in loss of Rs 45 lakh. 

Explaining the new initiatives for giving a big boost for sports in the state, Jain said all the 28 Sports Hostels in the state would be upgraded and 75 coaches for various sports disciplines would be appointed soon
The daily diet allowance for the inmates of these sports hostels had been increased from Rs 75 to Rs 125. 

The boarding and lodging facilities for the inmates of the sports hostels which is from 5th to 8th standard at present had been extended now upto PUC level.

At least one stadium would be developed in each Gram Panchayat jurisdiction under the Centrally sponsored scheme.

The union government would provide Rs 1 lakh per stadium under the scheme. 

Sports materials and equipment too would be provided under the scheme. 

Native sports like Kabaddi would be encouraged in villages, the minister said.



Moodbidri Gears up to host All India Inter-University Sports Meet

In a major boost to sports enthusiasts of the coastal Karnataka, the Jain pilgrim centre Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada district is getting ready to host the All India Inter-University Sports Meet at new international synthetic athletic track being laid at the Moodbidri Swaraj Stadium.

Preparations for hosting the national inter-university sports meet are going on in full swing, Abhayachandra Jain told reporters in Bangalore on Friday.

He said the Moodbidri Swaraj Stadium belonging to the State Government is being upgraded for the sports meet at a cost of Rs 5 crore with all the facilities to host the sports meet.

The stadium would meet the training needs of thousands of students in the region to hone their sporting skills after the conclusion of the inter-university sports meet , he said.

Another international Swimming Pool is being established in Mangalore to give a fillip to acquatic sports activities in the coastal region.
