Mangalore, Jun 18: Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year. On Father's Day, people also express love to their grandfather, uncle, father-in-law, stepfather or any other man who is a father-figure to them. Often we see that the father works hard for the family’s well being and strives hard to provide his family with all the necessities. In the process of fulfilling the responsibilities mounted on him, he often neglects his own needs and requirements. One of the consequences of this is that very often his personal healthcare takes a backseat.
To cater to this need, Kasturba Hospital has announced Father’s Day Celebration at its Hospital with a “Special Prostate Screening Week” for fathers. The week will begin from June 19 and will end on 24.
A Special Prostate Package just for Rs 190 has been launched. The package consists of Urosurgeon examination and a digital rectal examination (DRE), Ultrasound and Urine Flow Rate
One of the most common health troubles in men is BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) that affects the prostate gland. BPH is a condition of aging. Though the prostate continues to grow during most of a man's life, the enlargement doesn't usually cause problems until late in life. BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but causes symptoms in fifties and more than half of men in their sixties and as many as 90 per cent in their 70’s and 80’s have some symptoms of BPH.
Dr K Natarajan, Associate Professor, Department of Urology, Kasturba Hospital says the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia include the following: blood in the urine, feeling that the bladder has not emptied completely after urination, frequent urination, particularly at night, hesitant, interrupted, or weak urine stream caused by decreased force, leakage of urine, pushing or straining to begin urination, recurrent, sudden, urgent need to urinate In severe cases of BPH, another symptom, acute urinary retention (the inability to urinate), can result from holding urine for a long time, alcohol consumption, long period of inactivity, cold temperatures.
A physical examination, patient history, and evaluation of symptoms provide the basis for a diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Physical examination includes a digital rectal examination (DRE), and symptom evaluation is obtained from the results of the Symptom Index.
Ultra sonogram to ascertain the size of the prostate, bladder wall thickness, associated bladder stones and to know the status of the kidney, Uroflowmetry (a simple test performed to record urine flow). Enlarged prostate may be treated through medications i.e. 5-Alpha reductase inhibitors and Alpha blockers that relax smooth muscle tissue in the bladder neck and prostate, which increases urinary flow.
