Kundapur, Jun 12: Chandra Naik (56), a resident of Beesanpare of Jadkal near here who was said to have been assaulted by police a couple of months ago finally succumbed to injuries in Ajjarkad Hospital at Udupi on Sunday June 11.
Chandra Naik was found injured by the roadside on March 26, 2006, following which he was admitted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore. However, he was later admitted to Ajjarkad Hospital.
The Kollur police had earlier taken him to custody following a complaint by one Ratnakar Shetty, a moneylender who had stated that Chandra Naik had scolded him in abusive language. It was said that the police had beaten him up and when he fell unconscious, they threw him by the roadside near his house. The local Marathi Sangh later organized protest meeting in front of the Kollur police in this regard. A complaint had been lodged with the then SP Murugan too who had promised to carry out an inquest into the entire episode.
