Mangalore, Jun 10: The south-west monsoon has receded in Dakshina Kannada after the initial spell which left a trail of destruction in the district. People are facing an extended summer for the past week. Rain statistics for the district for the last week show a dismal figure. Between June 5 and June 9, rainfall recorded is nil. Mangalore taluk recorded heavy rain on May 30 and Mangalore city had experienced flooding in many pockets and also landslips. But there are no signs of monsoon clouds now.

Though local weather experts were not able to explain this, the Meteorological Department's monsoon forecast on the website says: There could be rain in one or two areas in the coastal region. The various regional almanacs indicated a deluge on June 8. But reports from rural areas are contrary to that. The initial spell of rain created some euphoria among farmers but the countryside is going dry now.

According to sources in the Agriculture Department, farmers have prepared land for raising nurseries. In some pockets, they have begun transplantation of young saplings expecting that it will start raining again. However, in Mucchur, Thumbe, Moodbidri, parts of Buntwal, farmers are showing signs of desperation.

One good sign is the Netravati flowing merrily. According to executive engineer of Mangalore City Corporation Suresh Babu, the inflow in the river course is copious.
