Kundapur, May 28: Rains that poured in the district have been a pleasant sight for some and ‘heavy’ for others. But for the farming fraternity, it’s time to get into the fields and begin agriculture activities.

With the monsoon setting in, the farmers of Kundapur taluk have already began work in their fields. One can see women carrying manure to the fields, while daily wage earners enthusiastically work in fields after a long summer.

About 19,000 hectares of paddy field exists in the taluk. Phalguna, Jyothi, Shakti, MTU 1001 and M04 variety seeds are widely used here. Among them, MO4 variety more suitable for the soil and 19,008 hectares of paddy fields were cultivated last year due to better rains.

Paddy is grown in the plains and also in the hilly areas in the taluk. As plains exist along the coast, the crop can sustain with less rains.

All is not welcome. The agriculturists have been facing the problem of paddy seedlings. Further the use of machines in farming has reduced the manual labour. It is felt that paddy cultivation is not a profitable venture, since it is difficult to cover the wages to be paid for agricultural labourers from the profit.

Problems aplenty, but nothing can stop the agriculturist who ventures into his farm to create a lush green patch of paddy crops.
