Mangalore, Apr 10: The Association for the Blind celebrated its silver jubilee on Saturday April 8 here.

Speaking on the occasion, Sumathi Pangal, joint secretary of the association, said that the association has been conducting eye check-up camps, distributing spectacles and also conducting cataract operations, ever since its inception in 1981. Giving information of the service done by the association, Pangal added that the association has been able to restore the vision of 22 people through corneal transplants, while it has supplied medicines to nearly 1500 patients and free spectacles to 9900 persons. It has also conducted several free eye check-up camps, wherein nearly 26,000 people availed of the benefit.

Ananthakrishna, chairman, Karnataka Bank, said that the bank will always support the cause of the Association for the blind, within the capacity of the law. He added that the bank has employed two persons with partial blindness and physically challenged persons too.

Others present were Prof Sethu Madava Rao, president, Gururaj Rao, secretary and Dr Prabha Adhikari, professor of Medicine, KMC.

Being totally blind, a telephone operator at Syndicate Bank, Panduranga Shanbogue, shared his experience at the programme.
