Lucknow, Oct 8 (IANS): The Samajwadi Party (SP) Tuesday attacked Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for his Monday speech in Amethi about farmers not getting adequate prices for their crops.
In a statement, SP spokesman and Prisons Minister Rajendra Chowdhary poked fun at the Gandhi scion and said, "It was surprising that people who have not even seen farm lands are now espousing the cause of farmers."
He added that Gandhi was tutored about farmers and agriculture. "His knowledge on the subject is bookish and that was reflected Monday when he spoke on the yawning gap between potato price and that of potato chips," the minister said.
Terming this as a failed attempt of the Congress leader to get the sympathy of farmers, he alleged that farmers were pushed into penury in the UPA-I and UPA-II regimes. "Wrong policies of successive Congress governments have forced farmers to commit suicide across the country," Chowdhary said.
