Amid hiccups, Indian, Pakistan PMs agree to better ties

New York, Sep 29 (IANS): India and Pakistan want to take their strained relationship forward but peace has to first return to the LoC that divides Jammu and Kashmir, a top Indian official said Sunday after Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif met here for their much awaited talks.

"Both sides wish to see a better India-Pakistan relationship. Both sides want a much better relationship," India's National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon told the media here, giving a summary of what the two prime ministers discussed for over an hour.

"In order to get there, we need to address today the issues we face," he added, which he said included restoring "peace and tranquility" along the LoC and addressing issues related to terrorism.

"(It is very important to address the terrorism issue," he underlined, making it clear that while there was no proof of India interfering in the internal affairs of Pakistan, the reverse was not true.

Manmohan Singh also told Sharif that it was vital to bring to book those in Pakistan who masterminded the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that killed 166 people including many foreigners.

According to Menion, Sharif said that indeed was Pakistan's intention.

The two prime ministers tasked the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries to come up with "effective measures" to restore the 2003 ceasefire on the Jammu and Kashmir border.

"The decision was for DGMOs to come up with real plans to restore the ceasefire."

Sharif raised issues of concern to Pakistan including the disputed Siachen glacier and Sir Creek, Menon said.

"Our overall impression was that the meeting was useful, it provided an opportunity to discuss issues that are troubling the relationship," added Menon.

Sharif invited the Indian prime minister to visit Pakistan, and Manmohan Singh -- who was born in what is now the Pakistani Punjab -- reciprocated. No dates have been set for their visits.

Menon admitted that while the two leaders desire a better bilateral relationship, they were "also conscious of the difficulties standing in the way".

The time is running out.Every action deserve a reaction. Just no point in eye wash talks between PMs. Eventually we need a PM Like Indira Gandhi to deal with the cross border terrorism with intensive military action. Deploy the anti missile batteries in place and attack systematically to flush out the terror hide outs. Shanti OM by our PM Man Mohan Singh will end up with more chaos and deaths in Indian camp.Strategic Leader with iron fist can put India in very safe spot. Until then let us keep our fingers crossed?

Pakistan have created their own super monster, rightist Islamic militants and now they have no control over those overgrown different terror organisations. Interestingly Pakistan is governed by both its political head Sharif and military headed Kayani independently. The notorious Pakistan military supports the militant terror group and encourages them to infiltrate into Indian territories. These government funded militants attack the Indian civil & military positions at their will still the Pakistani political wing and our government seem to be helpless. But we should find a solution to teach the militants a befitting lesson so that they will never dare to do it again.
Our military should organise special team to attack their terror camps in a big way through external help. Whenever the Pakistani militants attack us, our special team should attack them left, right and centre through all means including drone attack. But we should remember that Pakistan is the seventh largest active military in the world and they have deployed more than 60% of their military might in Pakistan occupied Kashmir region. We need to take external help to give them fitting counter attack. Hello! Hello! Our politicians wake up!!
    Jai Hind!

Navaz bhai when your own Army and ISI is not listening to your orders then how can you guarantee better ties ??
Your Army-ISI and PAK-Fundamentalists do not want to normalize relations with India. If Pak relation with India is normalized then Pak Army-IsI will lose their importance and huge financial facilities and also the Fundamentalists will not have any Hate-India-plank to provoke pak people against India and their own existence will become irrelevant.
So these three evil forces of Pak do not want peace with India and they keep on spoiling Pak govt's efforts to have peace with India.

The International news papers says something else. In fact Sharif is waiting for the next PM. MMS has lost respect & lost credibility . He is a liability and a mockery to the position. He is a laughing stock and its an universal fact that he is an under-achiever. I dont think we will move forward, do we need to? .Anyways it will be Modi or Raul Vinci who might take up this tash.

It is always good to be in good friendly relations with the neighbouring countries. It is difficult specially with Pakistan where the military always tries to boss over the civilian govt, the other militant groups working independently, many areas acting autonomous but still developing a dialogue with civilian govt to develop relation is good for India and Pakistan.

Ok the just a fix a date for the peace dialogue and watch. Your ISI & Army will send terrorists into Kashmir and create trouble in Kashmir just two days before the talks, and sabotage your peace efforts.
This has been happening every time Pak fixes date for peace talks, which proves that ISI & Pak Army is not under the control of democratically elected Pak Govt.
Democracy is just a sham in Pak.

    True,

In Pak real power is in Army's and ISI hand...no use in talking with Sharif...send somebody from army to talk to ISI and army...or be tough DONT talk catch terrorists and kill them as soon as they enter India and BOMB training Camps in Occupied Kashmir...perhaps CONgress is unwilling or Incapable of doing this....THEN WAIT FOR CHANGE IN 2014....and hope for the best....
