Udupi: 'Farmers leaving cultivation for lack of suitable prices'

Udupi, Sep 28: "Farmers are going away from cultivation as they are unable to get suitable prices for their produce.  So, the government is planning to fix prices in order to encourage them besides trying to sell the products in international market," said Vinay Kumar Sorake, minister of urban development and minister in charge of Udupi district.

He was speaking after participating in a meeting held at Katpadi, Mattu by Mattugulla Farmers Society. He spoke after receiving an appeal from the farmers concerning Gulla cultivation.

The minister, retired official Dr Ramesh Bhat who obtained GI certificate for Gulla cultivation, Mattu professor Nagappaya Madhyasthamattu and Janapada artiste Jeevan Mattu were felicitated on the occasion. 

Sudhakar D Amin, president of Mattugulla farmers society presided.

Zilla panchayat member Katpadi Shanker Poojary, Taluk panchayat member Sreekar Anchan, Katpadi grama panchayat president Vinaya Ballal, Kote grama panchyat president Prashanth Jathana, agriculture department’s deputy director Dr B P Satish, former zilla panchayat president Sarasu D Bangera, Kaup block congress president Navinchandra Shetty, Kisan unit district president Shashidhar Shetty, Parameshwara Adhikari and Dayananda Bangera were present.

Association president Sudhakar Ameen welcomed the gathering and gave an introductory address.  Laxman Mattu thanked. Sunil D Bangera conducted the programme.
