Kasargod, Dec 28: In a tragic incident on Saturday, December 28, in the afternoon, three children from the same family drowned in the Payaswini River near Erinj Puya, Kasaragod. The victims were Yaseen (13), son of Ashraf and Shabna, Samad (13), son of Ashraf's brother Majid, and Riyaz (16), son of Siddique and Ramla from Mangaluru.
The incident occurred around 2 pm when the three children, along with Riyaz, who was a Grade 11 (plus one) student from Mangaluru, had come to the family house in Erinj Puya earlier in the day. They went to bathe near the Payaswini River Bridge close to Erinj Puya.
Despite rescue efforts by the fire department and a scuba team led by Saifuddin, the children could not be saved. Their bodies were retrieved from the river and taken to the mortuary at Kasaragod General Hospital.
The Adur police conducted an inquest.
Several leaders, including State Registration Minister Kadannapalli Ramachandran and MLA C H Kunhambu, visited the site to offer their condolences to the grieving families.
