Puttur, Mar 4: Two persons were killed and 10 were injured in an accident involving a manganese ore laden lorry and a Tata Sumo at Kurukkodi curve near Shirady here on the National Highway 48 on Friday March 3.
The deceased have been identified as Suresh (25 and Soumya (11), residents of Dharwad. While Suresh was the driver of the Tata Sumo vehicle, Soumya had come for tour of South Karnataka along with her family members.
There were 12 persons in the Tata Sumo including the driver. After visiting Dharmasthala they were on their way to Subrahmanya when the manganese ore laden lorry collided with their vehicle at Kurukkodi curve. As a result all those who were in Tata Sumo were injured and were immediately admitted a private hospital at Mangalore. However, Suresh and Soumya succumbed to the injuries later in the hospital.
Since all those who were travelling in the Tata Sumo were injured and were not in condition to provide any details, the police found it difficult to gather information about them. Later on by seeing driver's dairy it was known that all of them hailed from Dharwad.
The injured have now been identified as Suvarna (30), Chennamma (30, Mahantesh (30), Chennaiah (54), Gangamma (70), Vishweshwari (26), Varsha (20), Basavraj (13), Shaila (38) and Vijaylakshmi (32). All of them are recuperating in a private hospital at Mangalore. However, Vishweshwari is still fighting for life and is still in the ICU, said the hospital sources.
Even the driver and cleaner of the manganese ore lorry have sustained serious injuries and are admitted to the hospital.
A complaint has been filed in the Uppinangady police station in this regard.
