Mexico City, Sep 15 (IANS): At least 14 people were killed and thousands evacuated in Mexico as torrential rains brought by hurricane Ingrid and tropical storm Manuel lashed the country.
Many people died in traffic accidents and landslides Saturday, reported Xinhua citing civil protection authorities.
In Veracruz state, around 5,400 people left their homes, and 3,600 of them were put up in government shelters, said local officials.
Ingrid strengthened Saturday to become a category 1 hurricane, the Mexican National Meteorological Service said.
Manuel soaked parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero states with heavy rain. The US National Hurricane Center warned the storm could also cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
Two weeks ago, tropical storm Fernand claimed 13 lives in Veracruz.
