Bangalore: India's role in global security, political environment stressed

Bangalore, Sep 10: India’s role in the global security and political environment, especially in the Asian subcontinent, and strategic importance of the country was emphasized at an International Conference organized by the St Joseph’s Autonomous College in collaboration with Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies (IPCS), New Delhi and National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore.
The two-day international conference on the theme of “Shaping the Security Architecture in Southeast and East Asia: Indo-Pacific as Look East 3.0,” is being held under the aegis of the Master's Programme, Department of Political Science of the St Joseph’s College in Bangalore was inaugurated on Tuesday.
Prof S Chandrashekar, JRD Tata Visiting Professor of NIAS, in his talk on the international strategic and security studies programme said India was poised to play a key role in the global strategic security environment in view of its strong democratic and political traditions and as an emerging economic power. With China’s rise and its military as well nuclear capabilities, India is being seen as a counter-balancing power. The growing Indo-US relations have made economic, political and strategic alliances imperative among the countries of the Asian subcontinent, he said.
Dr Suba Chandran, Director of IPCS, India along with China, Japan, South Korea and Australia were key players in the security architecture in Southeast and East Asia. It was crucial for the policy formulators and security strategy analysts to ponder on the role of India economic and strategic growth of the Indo-Pacific region and evolve a long-term coherent strategy, he said.
Eminent experts drawn from the diverse fields of policy formulation, diplomatic, military, bureaucratic, academic and research community are among the panelists, said Dr (Fr) Praveen Martis, Principal of St Joseph’s College, and said the institution was proud to host such an important event.
The Master's Programme, Department of Political Science of the St Joseph’s College was keen on holding more such events and help the student community to get proper orientation and exposure, Fr Martis said.
Fr Sunith Prabhu, Registrar of the St Joseph’s College, said the Jesuits had embarked on the mission of preparing the youth drawn from different strata, ethnic, cultural and economic background and prepare them to face the challenges of the modern world besides helping in their character formation.
The aim of the conference is to spread the deliberations on critical issues affecting India's national security and the larger International security environment to the regions across India, said Dr Venkat Lokanathan, Assistant Professor and Coordinator Master's Programme, Department of Political Science.
