Nine Maoists surrender in Odisha


Bhubaneswar, Sep 9 (IANS): Nine Maoists Monday surrendered in Odisha, police said.

The rebels, aged between 28 and 30 years, surrendered before police in Malkangiri district's headquarters town, about 620 km from here.

Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh told IANS three of them were active members of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist while the others were Maoist militia members.

Some of the surrendered rebels were involved in crimes like looting explosives from crusher units, triggering blasts at cell phone towers and extortion, he said.

The Maoists are active in more than half of Odisha's 30 districts. The district of Malkangiri is considered their stronghold.
