Udupi: Bishop Dr Gerald Lobo visits Jamia Masjid

Udupi, Aug 29: In a gesture aimed at promoting harmony and peace between communities, bishop of Udupi diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo on Thursday August 29 visited Jamia Masjid and stressed on the importance of maintaining peace in society through mutual understanding.

The programme was organized by Muslim Welfare Association, Udupi.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop Dr Gerald said that both Islam and Christianity teach peace and love and that by harmonious co-existence, understanding and mutual respect for each other, religious barriers can be overcome.

Emphasizing the need to promote and uphold peace in society, the bishop also said that media has a vital role to play in maintaining peace. "Leaders of different communities convey their wishes to one another on festive occasions through the media. This way, media has helped in promoting peace and friendship between communities," he said.

Jamia Masjid Imam Moulana Mohiuddin Jilani said peace forms the basis of religion and one must work towards propagating harmony between people. He also recalled the visit of Sri Laxmivaratirtha Swamiji to the Jamia mosque at the time of its inauguration and said, "While the bishop had attended Brahmakalashotsava ceremony at Kunjargiri, Sri Sugunendratirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math had come to the installation ceremony of the Udupi diocese. Such gestures help in promoting mutual understanding and respect between communities."

President of Muslim Welfare Association Budan Basha welcomed the gathering. PRO of Udupi diocese Fr Denis D'Sa gave the introductory remarks.

    Indeed a good move towards harmony. Harmony is always by keeping away differences. But real human unity which is better than harmony can be achieved if every religious leader and their flock is open
    minded to STUDY Their own and other holy books with UNBAISED MIND, with the help of GODS HELP THROUGH PRAYER and ACCEPT THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN HOLY BOOKS,FOLLOW IT and TEACH others who do not know about it without having selfish aim of PROMOTING one religion and one Community.The result is no fight in the name of God, no religious harmony meetings no question of tolerance. All will worship ONE REAL GOD IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH,together as God's CREATION.

    It is good to see Bishop Isaac Lobo making history in his newly formed Diocese of Udupi. I have known Bishop Isaac for a long time. He was a pioneer at C.O.D.O. before his assignment in Shimoga as Bishop. Interacting with different religious heads and religions is a step in the right direction. Muslims, Christians, Hindus, jains and all other religions are all focussed on harmony and peaceful living.
    I congratulate all concerned for their attempts to bring people of all communities under a single banner.It is good of Mohammed Maulana for inviting Bisop Gerald Lobo for the function. I see Father Denis D'Sa - the P.R.O. of the diocese who has recently got his posting is already on the scene. I am also happy to Father William Martis playing his part effectively as The Director - inter-religious dialogue of the Udupi Diocese.

    It was a very good gesture of the Bishop to visit the Jamia Masjid,.....barefoot.... a very good example. In the same way all the Bishops and priests should climb the the altar with bare feet to celebrate Mass.

    I agree with you Renita. Not only the Altar I believe we should also enter the Church too bare foot. The Church is God's house and must be treated as 'sacred' ground. I wish the faithful start this practice on their own in time to come as old practices are hard to change overnight.

    In fact several times when some of my Hindu colleagues/friends visit the Church out of curiosity they enter bare foot out of reverence.

    The word "religion" should be removed from the dictionary. For centuries we lived in harmony in india except during last 1 or 2 decades in which the two major party like cong and bjp started politicizing the religion and adopted split and rule formula for their vested interests. So if all the spiritual leaders come togather and convince their people about humanity nobody will misuse their belief.

    Praiseworthy gesture by Bishop Gerald Lobo and the Jamia Masjid, Udupi authorities.

    I wish Bishop Gerald Lobo extends such communal harmony promoting gestures to the Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, Jew, Parsi and all other religious communities too.

    Commendable action by udupi prilates. Very good deed. If people know Arabic ( the laungage of Holy Kuran ) the Christian prayer our father & the muslim prayer of Salah are 98% are same. There should be a peaceful existence between the communities.

If only all Church leaders had thought and acted in this way, the history of the Church and the world would have been entirely different than what we have.
