Mangalore, Aug 6: World Breast Feeding Week 2013 was observed on Tuesday August 6 to develop awareness among women, health workers and community as a whole in promoting breast feeding. The obstetrics and gynaecological nursing department of Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing along with Women and Child Development Centre, Bantwal observed this day in Primary Health Centre, Benjanapadavu.
The theme for the World Breast Feeding week 2013 was ‘Breast Feeding Support; close To Mothers”. The programme commenced at 10.30 am with lighting the lamp.
Mallika, assistant child development officer was the chief guest for the function. She stressed upon exclusive breast feeding and weaning foods in prevention of malnutrition. Dr Jeevan Lasrado, medical officer, Primary Health Centre, Benjanapadavu was the guest of honour, who highlighted on the benefits of the breast feeding. Dr Larrissa Martha Sams, principal, Laxmi Memorial College of Nursing, presided over the function and enlightened the gathering regarding breast milk an ideal composition for child’s development. Sandhya D’Almeida, HOD of obstetrics and gynecological nursing department highlighted on the significance of the day and welcomed the gathering.
Health awareness talk with PowerPoint presentation on breast feeding was given by Dr Aruna Kamath, consultant, (OBG). She stressed on the importance of breast feeding, different positions of feeding, advantages of breast feeding, complications and its management.
Videos on breast feeding techniques and breast crawl were presented. Handouts and pamphlets were distributed to all the 80 participants. The entire programme came to an end by 12.30 pm.
