Udupi: Traffic monitors, CCTV cameras in Manipal University soon

Udupi, Jul 26: In the wake of the infamous gang-rape incident that rocked Manipal, the district administration is seriously considering measures to enhance security. Udupi deputy commissioner Dr M T Reju convened a meeting with the district officials, representatives of Manipal University, CMC members, auto union and heads of other associations to discuss the issue.
In the meeting, it was decided to set up ten traffic monitoring points in the limits of Manipal University and also to install closed circuit (CC) cameras at several points. Besides, the district administration decided to install proper lights and provide unique identification number to all the auto rickshaws in order to regulate and curb any untoward incident in the area again.
Manipal University plans to drop students to their houses and hostels by security vehicle after library hours. "We will provide security vehicles to drop all students from the library to their respective houses after 10 pm," said Dr G K Prabhu, registrar of Manipal University, adding that they have increased patrolling in the campus especially in the night hours with additional assistance from police.

The DC ordered excise and revenue officials to close down bars and restaurants that stay open beyond the permitted time.

Discussions were also held regarding introduction of helplines and specific telephone number for the benefit of students and public in case of emergency.
Superintendent of police Dr Boralingaiah, other representatives from Manipal University, members of city administration, Auto union and other associations were part of the discussion.
