Goa to take stringent action against drug trade

Panaji, Jul 24 (IANS): Goa Advocate General Atmaram Nadkarni Wednesday told the Bombay High Court bench here that the government would take stringent action against drug trafficking prevalent in the state's coastal belt.

The assurance came after a division bench of Justice A.P. Lavande and Justice U.V. Bakre Tuesday directed him to explain the Goa government's stand on drug trafficking in Goa's northern coastal belt.

The issue came up while the court was hearing a petition on noise pollution.

The court also expressed concern that even the Calangute legislator Michael Lobo was feeling helpless after filing a complaint about drug trafficking and naming the alleged offenders.

The advocate general, however, informed the court that after the director general of police received a complaint from Lobo, North Goa Superintendent of Police Vishram Borkar met the Calangute legislator to get details on the rampant drug trade prevalent in the region.
