Difficult to work with BJP's new era leaders: Nitish Kumar

Patna, Jun 17 (IANS): It is difficult to work with Bharatiya Janata Party's new era leaders, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Monday, a day after his Janata Dal-United (JD-U) ended a 17-year-old alliance with the saffron party.

Nitish Kumar criticised the BJP's present leadership, saying it had forgotten its senior leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani and had forced the JD-U to end the alliance.

"BJP has forgotten its old leaders like Vajpayee and Advani, who played a major role in formation of NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and the national agenda that was prepared in the interest of all," Nitish Kumar said at a press conference here after holding his weekly Janata Darbar.

For the first time since the inception of the Janata Darbar, Nitish Kumar held it without the BJP.

"Vajpayee and Advani's era had ended in BJP and a new era has begun now. It was difficult for JD-U to work with BJP's new-era leaders," Nitish Kumar said.

The fissures between the BJP and JD-U were triggered by Nitish Kumar's opposition to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP's decision to make Modi its public face for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

On Sunday, Nitish Kumar told Governor D.Y. Patil to sack all the 11 BJP ministers in his government for non-performance and vowed to prove his majority in the assembly Wednesday.

Simultaneously, JD-U president Sharad Yadav announced he was quitting as convenor of the BJP-led NDA.

Nitish Kumar Monday said that JD-U's decision to end alliance with the BJP was taken after much deliberations within the party.

"JD-U decision was not taken in hurry. It was decided at the right time only," Nitish Kumar said.

He reiterated that BJP is responsible for the split in the NDA.

"BJP forced us to end alliance with it," he insisted.

Nitish Kumar also disagreed with BJP leaders saying the JD-U had betrayed the people of Bihar by snapping ties.

"The mandate was for the development of Bihar and we are doing this," he said.

The JD-U has 118 seats in the 243-member assembly, four short of a majority, while the BJP has 91 members. There are six independents, while the Congress has four members.

One of the oldest allies of the BJP, the JD-U is the 14th party to desert the NDA, which was formed in 1998 and ruled India for six years under the leadership of the now ailing Vajpayee.

The JD(U) was in NDA alliance mainly because of the good personal relationships of A. B. Vajpayee, L. K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj etc.of BJP and George Fernandes, other leaders of JD(U), as these leaders were political prisoners of late Indira Gandhi during internal emergency, (which led to opposition parties to form Janata Party in 1977), while Nitesh Kumar was still a novice in Indian politics. In the last parliamentary elections Nitesh Kumar forced his political mentor, George Fernandes to run as an independent from Muzapur Nagar by denying George party ticket. Now, JD(U) is out of alliance as his weak leadership does not convince major political partner BJP of NDA. I expect BJP alone to win around 240 seats at national election and BJP will form popular progressive government at the center. Nitesh may have to lick his political wounds for his political failures. He got power because of George Fernandes and leaders of emergency era (1975-1877), whom he has chosen to forget. Even if he joins Congress front, he will not be PM, as Congress leadership will not allow him to grow...

    KRPrabhumaam, Kudla/Bangalore,

Agree, George Fernandes inspite being great personality made few mistakes which everybody knows,,, to name few of them....bring to politics/giving importance to Nitish Kumar(perhaps because he is Kurmi to counter balance Lalu's backward class Yadav card), Sushma Swaraj(perhaps because her father was his lawyer during emergency), Jaya Jaitly(You guess the reason).....

After Oscar won and became a freshman MP in Jan 1980,,, George was sitting in Opposition ,,, I asked Oscar how you rate George's parlimentary conduct???

His reply to me was"Every thing about George is great,,, great Oretory ....but after giving a great speech in parliament when ministers replying,,, he does not care to listen to the reply....mostly not even cares to be present in the house".....

Every great personality have some flaws... other than this perhaps nobody can point any fingers at him...this Coffin scandal,,, George is totally innocent in this....

    Jai Hoooooo

Good that Nitish Kumar identified working with Narendra Modi will not get him very far. We all saw what happened to BJP when Narendra Modi campaigned in Karnataka. They lost miserably. And now as soon as he was announced the national face of the BJP, they lost Bihar. One by one all the allies are shying away from the BJP and JDU was a very big ally. 2014 Elections will be very difficult for the NDA. BJP leadership needs to pull up their socks and start thinking in the right direction.
