Udupi: Children on wheels create awareness on road safety

Udupi, May 26: A road safety awareness rally from city bus stand to MGM College was jointly organized by Upadhaya Roller Skating Association, Ambalpadi in association with district police department, Udupi road transport department and Udupi CMC on Saturday May 25.
As many as 50 children above the age group of 3.5 years participated in the rally. The little kids with helmets and roller skates set example to the elders to wear helmets and created awareness about road safety. The programme mainly focused on conveying a message about the need to follow traffic rules to safeguard precious lives.
Speaking after inaugurating the rally, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj said that though India is in the second position as far as population is concerned, it stands in the first in terms deaths due to accidents. The reason must be carelessness, ignoring traffic regulations or not realizing the importance of wearing helmets etc, he said.
"Life is valuable. Elders should learn from these kids," he added.
“Nearly 99.99 percent of road fatalities are caused due to violation of traffic rules. In the past week, 49 accidents were reported,” said vehicle inspector Vishwanath Nayak.
He added that a center to provide information on road safety has been set up in road transport office where people can obtain details on traffic rules and regulations.
Prabudev Mane DySP said that though skaters do not need driving license safety should be prioritized.
