Mangalore, May 17: Newly elected MLA J R Lobo visited Thumbay vented dam here on Friday May 17 and conducted an inspection.
He visited the dam in response to complaints by citizens about water scarcity in the city. He inspected the dam and discussed the problems prevailing there with the officials concerned.
Speaking to the media, Lobo said that there is sufficient water in the dam to last until the beginning of monsoon season and that there will no water shortage in the coming days.
"From past three days there was problem of water scarcity in the city due to the failure of a pump and due to shortage of power supply. The pipeline connecting Panambur too has developed some problems, and so also a valve. Repair work has been carried out and water supply will be back to normal by evening. We are also planning to install an additional pump soon," he said.
On the long-pending work on the new vented dam at Thumbay he said, "The work on the second vented dam will be complete by March-April 2014. The contractors are delaying the work and it has been decided to take action against them. Steps will be taken to speed up the work. If they cannot complete their task on time we will find other contractors to continue the work."
When reporters asked about the acquisition of land for the new vented dam and about providing the compensation to farmers who lost their land, Lobo, said, "Land has not been acquired for the project, so there is no question of providing compensation."
Corporator Lancelot Pinto, MCC commissioner Dr Harish Kumar and others were present.
