Mangalore: J R Lobo visits Workers' Union leader as hunger strike enters fifth day

Mangalore, May 16: Newly-elected MLA of Mangalore South, J R Lobo, on Thursday May 16, visited Sudath Jain Shirthady, state chief secretary, All India Workers Union who has been staging hunger strike on behalf of DK district workers and employees.
The hunger strike is being staged to protest against various issues in the ESI Government hospitals and the problems faced by daily wagers and bidi workers.
The strike which was launched on Sunday May 12 morning, today entered the fifth day.
After speaking to J R Lobo, Sudath Jain said, "We have been protesting against these issues from a long time. Earlier in 2009, we had staged a similar protest in front of ESI Hospital. No representatives visited us nor responded to our problems. But I am very happy and grateful to J R Lobo as he has taken keen interest in visiting us and listening to our problems."
In response, J R Lobo promised Sudath to arrange for a meeting with the ESI officials, the workers' associations and the people's representatives. "All the issues and the problems will be discussed and suitable measures will be taken in this regard," he assured.
He said appropriate steps will be taken after discussing the matter with higher officials and the government.
