Goa bans drinking alcohol on beaches

Panaji, Apr 25 (Agencies)Goa government has banned drinking liquor on beaches in a bid to curb littering and nuisance caused to women tourists.

However, one can continue to enjoy drinks at designated places such as beach shacks, Goa Tourism Director Nikhil Desai told PTI.

“The ban has been imposed under Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act which gives the right to the state government to ban things which create nuisance in the tourism zones. The act envisages to protect and maintain the tourist places from deterioration and erosion and preserve the tourism potential”, he said.

India Reserve Battalion (IRB), a wing of Goa Police, manning the law and order on beaches, is asked to implement the order with immediate effect. “The violation will attract arrest”, Mr. Desai added.

Mr. Desai clarified that the prohibition order is not applicable to drinking in licensed shacks or any other places where retail sale of liquor is allowed.

The ban is the fallout of mounting complaints by tourists getting injured by broken bottles littering beaches and of nuisance against women tourists by drunk hoodlums loitering beaches.

A favoured tourist destination, Goa attracts around 2.4 million tourists annually, chunk of whom are domestic.

Absolutely right Umesh. This is just cutting the nose to spite the face. What was needed was regulation and patrolling of beaches along with educating the public.

In response to another comment that it is not Indian culture , Goa has a portuguese tradition of "susegath". It may be Indian territory but it has Portuguese culture. So don't try to impose pseudo Indian culture.

Perhaps you could make a start by not ogling at the female tourists and passing lewd comments.

Goa.. has been famous for its beaches n beach parties where it gets most of the tourist revenue.. however, instead of banning booz in beaches means depriving the enjoyments for most of the distilled water tanks...... government shoudl haved come up with some idea to educate the public for littering so as to keep the flow of tourists. I had been to Goa beaches around 1600 to 1700 hours.. there is littering and few miscreants.. but still could be manageable

Goa gets 2.4 million tourists. Mangalore beaches gets 1%. Not one public toilette available on the beaches. So Mangalore beaches wont have that much of a problem with glas pieces but many thousends hatches of shit. The tourist minister accumulated 660% wealth from 2008 to 2012. The public funds have to land somewhere or ?

Why are we so irresponsible ? Littering everywhere that too with objects that can cause harm ?

More shame is that tourists, whom we invite in order to gain foreign currency, need to alert us about such objects ?

When will we be civilized ?
