5.7 quake rocks Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 24 (IANS): A quake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale rocked the Kashmir Valley Wednesday afternoon. No loss of life or damage to property has been reported from anywhere yet.

An official of the weather office here told IANS that "a moderate intensity earthquake occurred here 2.44 p.m. today".

The epicentre of the quake lay in the Hindu Kush Mountains in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region.

The Kashmir Valley is situated in an earthquake-prone region where tremors in the past have wreaked havoc. On Oct 6, 2005, a quake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale killed more than 40,000 people on the two sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in the divided Kashmir.
