Mangalore, Dec 27: A three day international conference on “recent advances and challenges in biotechnology” organized at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte was inaugurated on December 27 in the morning by Dr Jyoti Iyer, senior scientific manager, Biocon, Bangalore.
In her inaugural speech she said “lot of research and development activities should take place in the field of biotechnology and for the growth of such activities academia, industry and government should work together”.
“About 300 biotech companies are working in and around the country in different sectors of biotechnology such as biopharmaceuticals, bio service, bio agri, and bioinformatics and so on. To enter into such industries, you need to have good basic understandings, thinking skills, confidence level and honesty” she said to the delegates. “Unlike an IT industry, you need to have a long term goal to work in biotech industries” she added.
After releasing the proceedings of the conference Dr Prakash Kumar, Professor, National University of Singapore was addressing the delegates, said “Bachelor degree is not sufficient to work in the area of Biotechnology. You need to go for higher studies and involve yourself in R and D Activities to achieve something in the field of Biotechnology”.
Principal of the Institute Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar in his presidential speech said, “ to provide higher education in the field of biotechnology, the institute will start M Tech programme in Industrial Biotechnology from the academic year 2013 and in support of R and D activities, Biotechnology department is identified as one of the centers of excellence in the institute”
Dr Vaman Rao, Head, Biotechnology Engineering Department and Convener of the conference welcomed the gathering.
Large number of delegates and researchers in the area of Biotechnology, Deans, Heads of various institutes in the campus, Heads of various departments of the institute and Students from department of Biotechnology were present during the occasion.
Plenary speakers of the conference include Dr Sairam Rudrabhatla, professor, Penn State University, Harrisburg; Dr Prakash Hande, professor, National University of Singapore; Dr Arun Isloor, professor, NITK Surathkal; Dr B Madhusudan, professor, Davanagere University; Dr Gopal Marathe, professor, Mysore University.
